The one who was with women

13 :43 . I am still shocked by how mean people can be towards women – and this is even more apparent in the online world, where people have no limits, unfortunately. Oh, there are many examples of cyberbullying. The example I witness on a daily basis is that of my boss : she is a politician, which means she uses Facebook, Twitter and other communication channels, on which she receives really offensive comments; these are hateful at times. What I find even more shocking is that such comments sometimes come from other women.
I could name many, many more stories, unfortunately. In Italy, where I am from, this girl committed suicide because her ‘boyfriend’ shared on the Internet some videos that she had sent him; the videos were supposed to stay private as they revealed her intimacy. But these videos found themselves on Facebook groups, Whatsapp groups and she felt ashamed because her privacy was no longer private, she was being called names like ‘slut’ and ‘whore’ by complete strangers on the Internet – she was too young and couldn’t carry the burden of this public exposure. So she committed suicide. These are things that happen unfortunately – it may be that the stories don’t always come up but there are so many women out there who suffer from this type of bullying and it’s a growing number: as the internet grows, so does the bullying. The two are kind of connected, which is unfortunate. This is something I have worked on recently – not only revenge porn but also on cyberbullying in general , public violence or sexual harrassment also online. This is just one of the crazy examples when you think : how is this possible ?
This is why I work on women’s rights. It is a work that has to be done – because equality between men and women is not yet in place. We are not talking about a minority here : women are half of the world’s population ! They have the same place in this world as men do – yet women are still underrepresented in many sectors, or paid less, or treated with less consideration. And they are bullied more than men. That is unfortunate. Work has not been finished as long as equality is not in place. I don’t know if we are changing history, we try at least. Maybe it is not the most important committee in the Parliament (FEMM), but certainly politically, at this moment, it is the one that has most things to say. Why work on women’s rights ? It is a work that has to be done – because equality between men and women is not yet in place. We are not talking about a minority here : women are half of the world’s population ! That is truly unfortunate.

The FEMM committee is a specialised committee at the European Parliament, working on women’s rights and gender equality. Members of the European Parliament are divided up among 20 specialised standing committees, which instruct legislative proposals through the adoption of reports, propose amendments to Plenary and appoint a negotiation team to conduct negotiations with the Council on EU legislation.
